                      Mandatory Data Breach Notification Laws

With changes to legislation regarding data breaches for businesses, many pharmacies will be affected. If a data breach does occur, it is mandatory to notify every individual potentially affected/involved, as well as the
Officer of the Australian Information Comissioner (OAIC).
Health information is regarded as sensitive information, and thus has the potential to do serious harm to individuals involved, and to your business' reputation if not properly secured by your pharmacy.

The OAIC report this year showed that there were over 50 health-information data breaches in the months between April 2018 and June 2018 alone. Nearly 60% of these breaches were noted as criminal attacks, or of malicious intent.

It is essential to ensure you have adequate security to maintain your patient records. Consider cyber insurance, and make sure you have a plan if a data breach does occur. It is also worth reading the Pharmacy Guild's guidelines and their Do's & Don'ts regarding privacy, which can be found here

Corum SafeGuard Plus offers secure, fast and frequent data backup and storage, locally and to the cloud.

Contact us on 1300 669 865 today to safeguard your Pharmacy against harm.

Professor John Deeble - Remembering the "Father of Medicare"

Professor John Deeble, widely regarded as being instrumental in the implementation of Medicare in Australia in 1968, and again in 1984, has sadly passed away at the age of 87. Professor Deeble dedicated his life to the improvement of healthcare in Australia, co-authoring the proposal for universal healthcare and serving as the Founding Director of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. He also sat as chairman of the planning committees for both Medibank and Medicare and was a commissioner of the Health Insurance Commission for 16 years. May he rest in peace.
